Remember when social media first came on the scene? It was a virtual playground for preteens, teens and young adults to chat with their friends. First it was MySpace. Followed by Facebook. After that it was Instagram and now the latest craze is Snapchat.
Then the adults created their own profiles to keep an eye on their kids and stay in touch with friends, family and coworkers.
And now, social media has become a marketing haven for big, small and online businesses.
The boom on social media means traditional promotional methods like direct mail advertising are becoming less effective. And with people spending more time on social media it’s no wonder businesses of all sizes are flocking to those platforms. There’s a great chance their business will be seen.
Social media has the power to jump-start or reignite a business. But don’t think big businesses are the only ones who can benefit from marketing on these platforms.
Use Social Media To Promote Your Online Business
I’ve never had an advertising budget. If it weren’t for social media, I don’t know how I would have connected with people or promote my online business.
If you want to be a successful mompreneur, entrepreneur or solopreneur , here are some ways you can use social media to grow your online business.
To Increase Your Brand’s Visibility
You can use social media to increase your brand’s visibility. But before you do you have to figure out which social media platforms your target audience is at.
The Pew Research Center has documented a variety of ways people is the U.S. use social media. They published a report called Social Media Update 2018 and it shows Facebook and YouTube are dominating the socialverse! But Facebook is still the most popular social media platform with the most active users.
This is the perfect time to remind you that you don’t have to be on every social media platform. Instead, pull your Google analytics to see which social media platforms aren’t performing and delete them altogether.
Also, discover where your target audience is at and find out when your target audience is active on those platforms to make sure your brand is seen at the best times.
Now that we’ve got that covered, here are more ways to increase brand awareness.
- Be memorable – create an eye-catching header, bio, and pic
- Have a unique personality – in other words, just be you
- Be fun and outgoing – don’t be stuffy and all suit and tie
- Host giveaways and give entries for shares
And now, here are the best ways to use social media to promote your online business…
Building Relationships On Social Media Is A Great Way To Promote Your Online Business
Use social media to build relationships. Spark conversations by asking open-ended questions or post a fun graphic to get conversations going like the screenshot below:
Inspired and motivate your followers by posting motivational quotes like this one.
Providing The Ultimate Customer Service Experience
People are sick and tired of calling customer support to sit in the caller queue for what feels like an eternity only to be assisted by an automated system. And then you have to talk like a robot so the IVR can understand you like – Co-ri-na Ra-mos.
Customers want answers and solutions quick-style which is no surprise they turn to social media.
Give your customers the ultimate customer service experience by replying to questions or provide a solution to your followers in real time or as quick as you can.
If you’re encouraging conversations you have to be just as involved when it comes to keeping the conversation alive. Don’t just give a two-word reply or a “thumbs up” symbol and forget about it. Keep the conversations going because you don’t know where it can lead!
And speaking of follow up…
Follow through and follow up with requests for information. Here’s what I mean. If a follower asks for a resource and you email then the info, follow through with their request and follow up by sending an email asking if the information you provided helped.
Being A Go-To For Helpful Resources Your Audience Needs
Prove you can be the go-to for resources by sharing content that is relevant to your followers. But don’t just share your own content. Share the content of other bloggers in your niche. They are bound to have something to help your followers and it’s a great way to connect with them, too.
And create social media posts that share valuable tips like this:
When a someone is reaching out to you for help, that’s not the time to promote your product. I can’t tell you what a turn off it is to ask for help and get a “buy my eBook” or “I can help, here are my rates” response. And I’m speaking from my experience from when I was a newbie.
You don’t want to just push your product or service on your followers. If you do that, you’ll lose ’em quick.
I totally get you’re tying to make money but there is a time and place for that. If you genuinely help someone without expecting anything in return it can bring better opportunities for you.
Here’s what I mean.
Let’s say you’re a web designer and you get a message on Facebook from a follower asking for help with a formatting issue. You take the time to show them how to do it. And if they don’t get it, then you go out of your way to do it for them – at no charge, you’re happy to help.
Guess what happens. During your conversation your follower mentions he or she is ready to give their blog a makeover. That’s when you start asking questions – or fact-finding – to figure out what they’re looking for.
That’s when the opportunity to offer your service comes up. The next thing you know, you have a new client!
Over To You
And that’s how you can use social media to promote your online business. I don’t have to tell you social media is a big ole playing field and can be a useful tool to promote and grow your online business.
So tell me, how do you use social media to promote your business? Tell us about it in the comments section below.
