Starting a business comes with a lot of decision-making like what would be the best investments for your business to reach your customers and make money.
And starting a mailing list would fall under ‘best investments’. If you’ve ever searched online for strategies to grow your business, I bet having a mailing list was mentioned in almost all the articles you read.
It’s true having a mailing list can boost a business (I’ll share the stats that got me attention later in this post).
But not all businesses have a list. And I’ll admit that I didn’t have one at first either. I thought my business was too new to need one and that I’d start one as I got traffic to my website.
I had it all wrong.
I kept reading blog post after blog post about mailing list and how it can grow a business. These are the points that convinced me to start one.
The 5 Reasons That Convinced Me I Should Have A Mailing List
#1 It’s never too early to start a mailing list.
My duh-moment came to me when I read OptinMonter’s article Why You Need to Build an Email List Right Now – And the Exact Steps on How to Get Started.
One of the steps was to start early. And that’s when it dawned on me that I should have started my list even before my site was launched. If people want what I have to offer, they’ll sign up.
#2 You own your list.
Some business owners prefer social media over a mailing list. And there’s nothing wrong with social media. In fact, you should be promoting on social platforms. BUT that is their audience. You need to go by their rules to market to them.
#3 You’re reaching out to your ideal customer.
When you engage directly with your ideal customer, you’re building a foundation of trust and loyalty. And that goes with the third reason…
#4 With a mailing list, you gain buyers.
When someone subscribes to your newsletter, this should tell you they have a genuine interest in your product. And when you build trust (go back to #2), they won’t hesitate to buy your product.
#5 Stats back up why you should.
Like I mentioned earlier, having a mailing list can boost your business and there are some stats to support that.
When HubSpot released The Ultimate List of Email Marketing Stats for 2020, these are the stats that caught my attention:
- That email generates $38 for every $1 spent, that’s a 3,800% ROI (return on investment)
- More than 50 percent of U.S. respondents check their personal email account more than 10x’s a day. And it’s their preferred way to receive updates from brands.
- 59% of respondents say marketing emails influence their purchase decisions.

Wrapping Up
We all want our business to grow and flourish. And I think (along with other entrepreneurs) a mailing list is a step in the right direction. It’s proven to be one of the best ways to market your product.
There is no rule that says you HAVE to have a mailing list so ultimately, it’s up to you decide what’s best for your business.
But I hope the five reasons that convinced me will encourage you to start one for your business. Or, if anything, that it gave you something to think about.
Hi Cori,
There is a reson why the experts say, “the money is in the list.” Grow your email list offers you several opportunities to monetize your online business. But let me tell you a little secret; do you know that I’ve been too busy with clients’ work that I haven’t been paying close attention to my email? My email marketing is actually suffering. But I’ll work on it soon enough.
