This blog post was originally published on Not Now Mom’s Busy. The content has been updated to bring your more ways to get ideas for your next blog post.
If you’re a seasoned blogger, take a walk down memory lane with me. Back to a time when you first started blogging.
The passion and drive for your blog was off the charts. You checked off all the items on your to-do list. And your blog editorial calendar was filled with topics to write about. You thought, “man, there’s nothing to this blogging thing.” And like George Lopez you start to think “I got this.”
And this goes on for a while, until…the worst thing that can happen to a blogger…writer’s block!
That is every blogger’s nightmare – not having a thing to write about.
You sit in your chair staring at a blank word doc or edit post screen with the cursor blinking away as if it’s yelling at you to type something – “anything for crying out loud – just start typing, dammit.”
It happens to the best of us.
As a matter of fact it’s exactly what happened to me. When I put this post together I was actually looking through my notes for something else to blog about but nothing was jumping out at me. I’d decide on a topic, type some sentences, stare at it for a minute, delete what I typed, type something else and repeat the process.
I was about to walk away from my computer when a topic finally came to me – where to find ideas for a blog post. I started typing away quick-style and this is the finished product! 🙂
If you’re a new blogger you’re probably busting out with all kinds of content for your blog with no problem. But let me ask you this…do you have a plan in place in the event you’re struck with writer’s block?
While it might not make sense to do it right now, you always want to have a back-up plan just in case this ever happens to you. And believe me, at some point it will. Not tryin’ to bust your bubble or anything, I’m just keepin’ it real.
I mean, even the top bloggers have experienced this once in their blogging journey.
Where To Find Ideas For Your Next Blog Post
When you start a blog, it’s good to have a list of resources to help you survive your first year as a blogger. That should include having a list of places to find ideas for a blog post.
The five hot spots I’m about to mention to you are what I personally use to get ideas for a blog post and I hope they help you too. Let’s start with Flipboard.
I came across Flipboard a couple of years ago while I was checking my stats on Google Analytics. I noticed it was the number one source of traffic under referrals so I decided to check out the site and instantly I took a liking to it.
In case you hadn’t heard of Flipboard before, it’s an online magazine that’s created by users like you and me and it’s a gold mine for finding ideas for a blog post no matter what niche you’re in. You can browse through their cover stories or you can search using specific keywords. But be warned, you will get lost with all the articles at your fingertips!
Facebook groups is another great place to find ideas for a blog post. Let’s say you’re in a group that also supports new bloggers. New bloggers have lots of questions like you and I did when we first started and they will likely post a question on the thread in hopes for an answer.
Those questions can make great blog posts, dear reader – because it’s more likely other new bloggers have the same question.
Another place you can find ideas for a blog post – your older blog posts.
Your Older Blog Posts
Yes, even your older posts can give you an idea for your next blog post. Here are several ways you can do this is.
- You can take older posts and republish it with updated content
- Put your content in another format to give it some oomph like an infographic
- Turn your content into a video tutorial
- Do a round-up type post of your popular posts for the month
- Or you can do a follow-up post from a topic from older content
Blog comments can have a trove of blog post ideas.
Just read through your comments and pick up on clues. For instance, if you find you’re answering the same question that’s a sign you need to write a blog post about it.
If you don’t get a lot of comments, look through the comments of other blogs.
Content Idea Generator Tools
Content idea generator tools are one of my favorite tools to use when I’m having trouble coming up with a topic to write about.
All you have to do is type in some keywords and the tool will do its job and give you some topics to blog about.
Here are a few of the ones I use:
Brainstorm With Your Blogging Buddies
This method is by far my favorite because I’m not only getting ideas for my next blog post but I also get to chat with my blogging comadres (girlfriends)! If you have blogging buddies to chat with on a daily basis – create a support/brainstorm group to give each other extra support.
You don’t have to be in the same niche. All that matters is that you’re building a relationship with your fellow bloggers, you support one another and it eventually develops into a friendship.
I used to chat with my girls Bren and Dana three or four times a week. When one of us mentioned we’re in a writing slump the others would start throwing ideas out there. The next thing you know, a blog post is born!
We’ve also been there to support each other with our personal lives. The support you get from other bloggers who understands where you’re coming from and can shed some insight is priceless.
It’s been a while since the three of us have had a good chat but what I love most is that when we do, we pick up right where we left off.
Other Ways To Get Ideas For Your Next Blog Post
Here are some other methods that have been proven to give you inspiration to blog:
- Keep a notepad or have a notepad on your mobile phone to take notes in case you’re out and about and an idea strikes you.
- Get input from your followers by posting a question on your social media pages. This is also a great way to engage with them!
- Take a break from blogging. It can cure a case of writer’s block.
Over to You
