Influencer marketing is taking the socialverse by storm and the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. 🙂
Linqia shared some insights from The State of Influencer Marketing 2018 that dives into how brands and agencies will use influencer marketing.
Here are some stats that caught my eye:
81% of marketers are using influencer content in other channels, while 51% of them reported that it outperforms brand-created content.
39% of marketers plan to increase their influencer budgets this year.
But what really got my attention was that 52% of marketers are planning programs that leverage all types of influencers – celebrities, bloggers and micro-influencers.
What is a micro influencer? SnapApp defines a micro influencer as brand advocates that have a highly engaged, niche audience who generally have between 1,000 to 10,000 followers.
So why have brands been showing so much love to micro influencers lately? It’s because people would rather turn to ‘regular people’ or influencers that they can relate to – people like you.
You may not have a huge following or get paid millions like Kim Kardashian but folks believe micro influencers are a more reliable source than celebrities who get paid millions to promote a product.
How To Become A Kick Ass Micro Influencer
Collective Bias did a large-scale national survey studying how consumer’s online behaviors impact in-store purchases. The report showed that 30% of U.S. consumers are more likely to purchase a product endorsed by a non-celebrity influencer than a celebrity.
And Tap Influence stated in their Influencer Marketing report that 40% of people said they’ve purchased an item online after seeing it used by an influencer on social media.
So how do you become a kick ass micro influencer? Here are some steps that can help you make your mark as an influencer.
Choose Your Niche
If you want to be a successful micro influencer you have to choose a niche. When you’re in the planning phase, think about what you’re passionate about, hobbies, etc,
You should know your niche like the back of your hand – so much so that peers, fam and friends look to you for information or advice.
So if you have a passion for let’s say baking, make sure your social media pages reflect that so people who visit your website or social media pages can clearly identify your niche.
Pinngle wrote a great article about profitable niche markets for influencers that will show you what to focus on as an influencer.
Start A Blog
Blogging is still a powerful tool. One way to position yourself as an influencer in your niche is to start a blog and fill it with content that’s relevant to your niche.
And when it come to writing content it should provide real value to your audience.
One of the most popular CMS (Content Management Systems) is a self-hosted WordPress website but if you’re on a budget you can start with a free WordPress.com* website.
Have A Rock Solid Content Strategy
Micro Influencers are known for sharing valuable content with their audience and it all starts with a rock solid content strategy.
A solid content strategy will have a mix of content created by you and other micro influencers. And when it comes to sharing that content on social media there should be a perfect balance.
You don’t want the content you share to be all about you. It’s not about you at all – and I mean that respectfully. It’s all about your audience and giving them what they want and need.
Business.com explained the 5:3:2 rule for social media to get the right balance of content. For every 10 posts:
- 5 should be content from other sources (think authority bloggers) that are relevant to your audience. This is known as curation.
- 3 should be content you’ve created but that’s relevant to your audience.
- 2 should be personal, fun content that humanizes your brand to your audience. This is referred to as humanization.
If you follow this rule, you will always give your audience a perfect balance of content.
Choose Your Social Media Channels
You might want to sign up to every social channel in the socialverse but the truth is you want to make sure you’re on the right social media channel to make to maximize your marketing efforts.
SproutSocial wrote an article of the best platforms for social media influencers to post on and they share some examples on how to get noticed.
Their pick of social media channels are:
Engage, Engage, Engage
If you’re not providing value to the conversation, you’ll never reach the ears of anyone influential” ~ Neil Patel
It can’t be said better than the way Neil Patel said it! When he shared 19 strategies that’ll help you become an Influencer, he said to become an influencer you need to be the person people are talking about. And that’s so true!
He also talks about word of mouth still being the most influential element that drives purchase decisions.
To be recognized as an influential influencer is by engaging in conversations and provide value by sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Quora is a great place to start sharing your knowledge by answering questions people post. You can also join Facebook groups to help others by sharing yours and other’s niche-related content to guide those who also want to be an influencer.
